What Is IBS?

Digestive health plays a central role in overall wellness, immune regulation, inflammation control, and nutrient absorption. Conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)—which includes Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis—represent different but often overlapping forms of chronic gut dysfunction. IBS is considered a functional bowel disorder characterized by altered gut motility, sensitivity, and nervous system signaling, while Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis are autoimmune inflammatory conditions that cause ongoing tissue inflammation within the digestive tract. Despite these distinctions, all three conditions can severely disrupt quality of life and are frequently influenced by inflammation, immune imbalance, gut microbiome disruption, stress, and dietary triggers.

These digestive conditions are far more prevalent than most people realize. IBS affects an estimated 10–15% of the U.S. population, making it one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders. Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis together affect over 3 million Americans, and the incidence continues to rise, particularly among younger individuals. Many patients struggle for years with symptoms before receiving a clear diagnosis, and even after diagnosis, conventional treatment often focuses on symptom suppression rather than addressing the underlying drivers such as gut permeability, chronic inflammation, immune dysregulation, food sensitivities, infections, or stress-related nervous system imbalance.

Common Symptoms of IBS, Crohn’s Disease & Ulcerative Colitis

Because the gut communicates directly with the immune system, brain, and hormonal pathways, symptoms can extend far beyond digestion alone. Patients may experience daily discomfort, unpredictable flare-ups, and systemic symptoms that affect energy, mood, and overall health. Common symptoms associated with IBS, Crohn’s disease, and Ulcerative Colitis include:

Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain, cramping, or bloating

  • Diarrhea, constipation, or alternating bowel habits

  • Urgency or incomplete bowel movements

  • Gas or excessive abdominal pressure

  • Fatigue or low energy

  • Food sensitivities or symptom flare-ups after eating

  • Unintended weight loss or difficulty maintaining weight

  • Nutrient deficiencies or anemia

  • Joint pain, skin issues, or inflammatory symptoms outside the gut

What Our Patients Are Saying

Real people who were tired of being told “there’s nothing more we can do.”

Amy Taylor

“By six month's time, my goiter was gone, bowels returned to normal, energy and zest for life were back to normal, sleep was good, skin improved — all with ZERO prescription drugs. I highly recommend consulting with him; if he is not able to help you, he will tell you.”

Steve R.

“Dr. Kuhn impressed me with his holistic approach of integrative medicine that treats the cause and not the symptoms. I no longer take pain pills to function, and living virtually free from daily pain and without drugs is well worth the time, effort and cost.”

Jennifer T.

“Thanks to Dr. Kuhn, my peripheral neuropathy has minimized, my sugars have come under better control, and I am losing weight. What makes it easy to achieve what I have is the fact that Dr. Kuhn doesn't just tell you how, he lives it.”

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the most common questions patients ask about care at Chronic Conditions Center, so you can feel confident about your next steps.

What happens during the free consultation?

You’ll have a relaxed 15-minute phone call to discuss your main concerns, review your history at a high level, and see if our approach is a good fit before scheduling a full exam.

Do you accept insurance or how does payment work?

We are an out-of-network clinic. Many patients use HSA/FSA funds, and we provide receipts you may submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.

How long before I typically notice improvements?

Every person is different, but many patients begin noticing early changes within the first few weeks, with more significant improvements over the following months.

Can you still help if other doctors have not?

Many of our patients have seen multiple providers before coming here. Our functional and regenerative approach focuses on root causes, not just symptom management.

Do you offer both in-person and telehealth visits?

Yes. We see patients in person in Williamsburg and Chesapeake and also offer telehealth options when appropriate, depending on your specific needs and state regulations.

How should I prepare for my first in-depth appointment?

Bring any recent lab work, a list of medications and supplements, and a short timeline of your health history so we can make the most of our time together.
